Apple iPad Air 2 Review

The Bottom Line

Once Apple introduces their iPad Air 2, they have prepared and invested in the product carefully to make it become the best one in the competitive high-class tablet market. The stunning design including thinner and lighter size, sharpener screen and the brilliant Touch ID sensor feature definitely entice almost tablet users. Nevertheless, wonderful benefits also go along with drawbacks. The device has a shorter lasting battery and no mute switch which contribute to create a smaller tablet frame.

The iPad Air 2 obviously is the most desirable first-class tablet everyone wishes to have. However, if you are using an iPad Air, you might consider whether you should change to the new version or not.

Detailed Review of iPad Air 2

The iPad Air 2 is considered as an upgraded deluxe tablet instead of a redesigned version of the first iPad Air model. The two premium tablets are different in term of thickness. The original iPad Air dimension is 0.29 inches whilst the number of iPad Air 2 is only 0.24 inches. However, you still feel solid design of the newest iPad Air. Perhaps because its weight of 437g is changed not much compared with the original 469g. The aluminum body feature keep used with two exterior amendments. The first improvement is applying the Touch ID sensor which used for the iPhone 5S. Users now do not have to enter PIN codes to unlock their iPad great experience of unlocking their loved tablets. They have chance to experience one-finger convenience and it’s really an amazing touch. The second adjustment is removing manual function of mute or screen rotation lock. Now you need to do the on-screen controls to alter the status.

Thanks to applying the new big blast of speed A8X process for iPad Air 2, user interaction and requirements are handled on the model. The main difference between the iPad and the iPhone is applying three instead of two processing cores processor. Additionally, the internal memory space is upgraded from 1 GB to 2 GB. As a result, it becomes the high-speed tablet which performs outstanding users’ wishes than ever like the new iPhone 6. It is not surprised that the tablet goes beyond the new NVIDIA Tegra K1 in term of applications. You are even able to go through complicated works like editing videos on the devices.

The $499 iPad Air 2 has 16GB storage space which is cramped room for increased numerous applications and high-resolution media files. The noticeable storage space improvement is for the Apple $599 and $699 versions. The first one has 64GB available space instead of 32 GB like the original one. Meanwhile, the $699 tablet offers 128 GB rather than only 64GB as older one. This change is appreciated by prospective customers who are looking for more available space rather than the 16GB model. Unfortunately, the storage issue was not considered and improved to whole iPad product line. There is no also way to increase the space via micro SD cards like other competitive tablet on the market place. As an alternative, Apple’s customers could use iCloud service to save their data by paying for more storage space on there. However, the option is not available if their devices are not connected to the internet or when they are on the plane.

Apple with the iPad Air is known as the best tablet producer in term of screen quality on the market. Since the iPad Air 2 launched, its display feature has been better. By implementing a specific connecting process, there is no longer an air gap between its screen and glass. The practice helps to decrease size of the device and also improve display quality. User could feel comfortable to use the tablet under sunlight because bright glare and reflection are controlled well. Like other Apple product applied Retina resolution technology, the 9.7 inch display also has the identical 2048×1536 attribute. This number not the highest resolution in the competitive market but definitely you will enjoy 1080p video with the excellent high quality.

The iPad Air 2 is also rated high-score because of substantial development of the camera characteristics. The rear iSight camera is 8 megapixels instead of 5 and takes a competitive advantage of resolution level. Thanks again to the new faster A8X processor, there are extra included benefit to the camera such as taking speedily 10 photos per second for images or capturing 120 frames each second for slow-motion videos. Even Apple adjusted to offer more control over pictures and categorizing feature, it is still hard to meet control attribute of some third parties applications.

The iPad Air 2 is thicker there is no impact to the battery dimension. Actually, the battery is smaller with just 27.64 WHrs, compared with the 32.4 WHrs first iPad generation version. Apple said that you can use either the original or the iPad Air 2 to watch videos during 10 hours. I tested the two of them and the real results are better than Apple estimated. You can use the original one in twelve hours and the iPad Air 2 in eleven hour. You might not satisfy with the declined battery life but please note that with the remarkable size and weight, this number is one of the highest numbers that the first-class tablets are able to offer.

To own the iPad Air 2, you need at least $499 for the 16 GB Wi-Fi model. If you want to upgrade its storage, you need to pay additional $100 amount. Meanwhile, starting with $629 is the 4G LTE wireless with the similar 16 GB tablet. This is an attractive price for people who want to try the luxurious iPad’s features at affordable cost. However, if you already experienced an iPad Air, you might not have much motivation to change to the new one. Indeed, you just have to pay $399 to get the original iPad Air 16 GB tablet.

At this segment, Apple has to compete with the redoubtable products: the new Google Nexus 9 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5-inch. Priced $399, the Nexus 9 display is smaller with competitive attributes. However, applying Tegra K1 processor makes it hard to compare quality with the iPad and somehow led to lower performance level. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab S has better resolution screen in term of level and size dimension. It is almost as thick and weighty as the iPad Air 2. Again, the Samsung quad core processor could not compete with the big blast of speed A8X process applied for iPad Air 2. The performance is not the same at higher price of $500 for a 16 GB Wi-Fi tablet.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch Tablet Review

The Bottom Line

There are significant improvements in the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX which make the tablet a remarkable version. All hardware issues from the original Fire HD are solved in the new version with the upgraded resolution screen and software. The version runs smoothly and has responsive performance. Moreover, the On-call videos support service is always available whenever you have problems. However, the tablet has no rear-camera and microSD card slot. You also have to pay additional fee if you want to remove ads.

It should be noted that although the Amazon model is an Android-based tablet but not all Android applications are able to download as Google Play Store. The Kindle Fire HD is highly recommended for those who are not familiar with tablets or who are interested in benefits of Amazon Prime membership for reading books and watching videos.

Detail Review – Kindle Fire HDX

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX looks very different to the previous tablet. It is slimmer and lighter with remarkable upgrades. The front design is not changed much but there are remarkable changes in the back. Unlike the Kindle Fire HD  with rounded edges, the new model has angles edges. It also lighter with only 0.67 pounds and slimmer at just 0.35 inches due to the impressive construction of magnesium and glass/nylon composites. The soft surface also makes it remarkably comfortable to hold. Amazon added volume buttons for the new model which is lacked in the previous version. However, they are at recesses so it is not easy to find the buttons at the first time.

The Kindle Fire HDX has significant improvement in term of performance. It runs on a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHZ with 2GB of RAM to which create smooth proceeding when you are running multiple apps at once. It overpasses the previous Kindle Fire HD by offering not only quick and responsive interface feature but also a modern graphics processor. Users now have smooth experience with the system and enjoy serious games which they couldn’t have with the previous tablet.

The next remarkable improvement of the tablet is the screen quality. The display resolution has been upgraded to 1920×1080. As a result, the Kindle Fire HDX is able to display high definition 1080p video content instead of only 720p as the previous model. The upgraded feature is the same as Google tablet – the 2013 Nexus 7. There is only one difference of the display is the reflective glass layer. It is hard to use the device outside even when you crank the brightness up all the way. Thankfully, the brightness can be set at high levels and adjusted automatically with an ambient light sensor.

Besides the changes in hardware, there are numerous changes the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablet’s software. The original carousel interface still is used to browse between applications and media. However, adding a grid view makes the process become faster and easier to manage. In additional, you could quickly switch between applications with the Quick Switch instead of moving back to its home screen.  The May Day becomes the most useful function for users who are unfamiliar with technology. It provides free one way video call to an Amazon expert. The person will provide supportive resolutions, even by drawing on their screen. Hope that all new users could experience the service with low waiting times as Amazon promised. There is one more supportive feature which will be available at mid-November named Second Screen. With the feature, you can move media files from the tablet to a TV for watching.

There is not much information about the Kindle Fire HDX tablet’s internal battery capacity but it is claimed to run eleven hours for mixed using and seventeen hours for reading. In video rundown test, the tablet’s battery life is ten hours and thirty minutes and it is longer than the Google Nexus 7 (2013). However, the running time is not as long as twelve hours of the first generation Apple iPad Mini tablet. You can use the tablet for reading during seventeen hours as it has a useful reading mode. The feature saves the battery life by turning down numerous internal running functions. However, it’s still hard to be comparable with the dedicated Kindle Paperwhite e-reader.

The tablet’s price is quite high at $299. It is the same as the price of the Google Nexus 7 but lower than the price of the Apple iPad Mini. Unfortunately, the price is included the special offers which has ads on the lock screen like the first Kindle Fire. You have to pay additional $15 to remove the ads. In additional, power adapter is not provided so it’s just charged from a USB port on your computer. Beside the drawbacks, the Kindle Fire HDX also has a disadvantage of restricted software access as a typical Amazon device. This is also the main reason why users prefer the Nexus 7 which has larger selection of applications than Amazon’s offerings.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-inch 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet Review

The Bottom Line

There are different controversies about the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Many users have great experience with the Amazon’s customized software which offers stable performance of playing media content. It brings to Amazon Prime members significant benefits of reading books, watching videos and listening to the music as they are all stored in Amazon could service. The device is only $169 and offers Kid-friendly FreeTime mode. It’s really a great tablet with remarkable upgrades compared with the previous version. In the other hand, some users complain about the tablet’s drawbacks such as sluggish UI compared with the latest Android models or additional fee required for removing ads.

Detail Review – Amazon Kindle HD 7-inch

There are significant improvements in the new Kindle Fire HD. The upgraded model is lighter and thinner than the previous one. Even the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy 2 7.0 are not as thin as the Amazon version with only 0.40 thickness but in term of weight, they are lighter than the Kindle Fire HD with 0.87 pounds.

Amazon succeeded in designing smooth texture for the tablet. The new Kindle Fire HD offers soft-touch experience with the thin plastic back panel. Beside the micro-USB port, there is an additional micro-HDMI port to access an HDTV. It’s definitely a competitive advantage of the new model. However, there is no micro-SD card reader for additional storage.

In fact, the most remarkable improvement of the Kindle Fire HD is the display. The 7-inch IPS display of the original Kindle Fire offered accurate color and nice viewing angles. However, the screen solution is lower than other tablets. The new model offers higher resolution with 1280×800 which is typical for the 10-inch screens and it is able to display 720p high definition video content. The significant improvement make the tablet be comparable with the Galaxy Tab 2 and Nexus. It even overpasses the tablets in term of outdoor visibility.

The previous Kindle Fire version has no camera. Amazon improved the new model with a 1.0 MP Front Camera. Other tablets also have one and Google even offers a front camera with video conference feature. Amazon also put a 1.0 MP Front camera on their tablet so users could experience Skype video conference.

The new tablet performs slightly better than the original one with a TI OMAP 4460 dual core chipset clocked at 1.2GHz. Actually, the decent performance is result of running a customized version of Android OS version 4.0. Obviously, the tablet performs smoother than the original model but it can’t compete to the Nexus 7 running Tegra 3 quad core processor and using newer Android 4.1 OS. The Amazon Kindle Fire HD has a completely different interface design which makes almost users couldn’t recognize it uses Android OS. However, the software is considered as the key of the version. The tablet is very easy to use for surfing the internet, reading books or watching Prime Instant videos. Especially, the Kindle Fire HD comes with dual-speakers which offer pleasurable experience of playing digital videos or listening to music with clearer and louder sound than other tablets. The version is highly recommended for those who use a tablet just for basic entertainments. However, if you use the model for more different functions, the Amazon tablet does not perform well as other tablets using the generic Android interface. The Kindle Fire HD offers Kid-friendly FreeTime mode which is very useful for parents to manage their children in using tablets. However, it causes a debate regarding the feature’s cost e.g the web browser.

Users might not notice upgraded quality of the Wi-Fi. Almost tablets offer 802.11n wireless on the crowded 2.4 GHz spectrum. Amazon decided to improve wireless performance of the new Kindle Fire HD with a dual antenna. It now supports both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band. It makes the tablet be more flexible on Wi-Fi connection, especially in working environment where deploying the 5 GHz commonly.

Using advertisement on the Kindle Fire HD of Amazon causes a debate. The tablet displays full-color ads on its lock screen as a way to subsidize the low price tablets: $199 for the 16 GB model and $249 for the 32 GB one. The Amazon advertisements are not too annoying but if you want to remove the ads, you need to pay additional $15 fee.

The Kindle Fire HD uses a 4,400mAh battery and Amazon claims that users can use the tablet during 11 hours. In video rundown test, the battery lasts for 9 hours and 45 minutes. The running time is not as long as the Amazon’s estimated number but it’s still better than the original Kindle Fire. The running time is also longer than 9 hours and 30 minutes lasting of the Google Nexus tablet. Meanwhile, other 10-inch tablets have longer running times due to their larger batteries.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10-inch Tablet Review

The Bottom Line

To some extent, Lenovo succeeded in launching the distinctive Yoga Tablet 10. The model is sold at a reasonable price. It also has competitive advantages of a typical kickstand and decent battery life compared with other 10-inch tablets. However, it takes time to be familiar with the odd design or to carry it around. There are some performance issues such as sluggish proceeding and a subpar screen. Meanwhile, other tablets which even though have lower prices offer smooth experience with higher resolution display.

Detail Review – Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10

Obviously, Lenovo tried hard to launch the Yoga Tablet 10 and they gain positive results. Its shape is not like almost thick screen tablet. The tablet comes with a cylindrical hinge on its bottom that looks like the Apple Bluetooth keyboard shape. It changes the tablet’s center of gravity. The weight is distributed mainly to one side so the tablet is remarkably comfortable to hold. The other edge is extremely thick at only 0.75 inch. With the odd design, the processes of store and transportation are quite complicated. The Yoga weighs only 1.3 lbs but still be heavier than the latest iPad Air. It has decent built quality with impressive combination of plastic and metal accents.

The Lenovo Yoga tablet’s design is different from other 10-inch devices because of its fully extended kickstand. Kickstand features prominently have been introduced in the Microsoft Surface product lines. However, the Yoga Tablet 10 offers a distinctive stand with multiple modes including Tilt, Hold and Stand. The Tilt mode creates a small angle which is perfect for typing or gaming. Meanwhile the upright stand option is highly recommended for watching digital videos. The stand might be unstable like falling over when you touch the screen if it is not rotated out in the right way.

The Yoga tablet 10 is powered by a quad-core MediaTek 8125T chip which is recently used for many budget tablets. It is a low-power quad-core ARM SoC based on the Cortex-A7 design which runs at a speed of 1.2 GHz. It does not perform as well as the Cortex A9 based chip but still offer smooth experience of playing media files. Display rotation function is also not proceeded quickly as it is expected in such a modern tablet.

There are two options for the tablet’s storage: 16GB and 32GB with different costs. If you have a tablet of Apple and want to upgrade the internal storage, you have to pay significant extra cost. Meanwhile, for the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10, you just have to pay $20 to change from the 16GB version to 32GB one. The tablet’s storage is also expandable with a microSD card slot. However, the card slot is located under a cover behind the kickstand. When the kickstand is folded, it is quite hard to access the slot at the same time.

The 10-inch display of the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 is not competitive feature of the slate with a basic 1280×800 resolution. Some competitors such as the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX offer higher-resolution displays with 1920×1200 pixels for 1080p high quality videos.  The 10-inch screen still offers fine colour, high brightness and great viewing angles. The Yoga Tablet 10 is well-suited for high bright conditions. However its outdoor visibility is not good under intensive sunlight conditions. With the Power VR SGX 544 Graphics Controller Model, you can play games smoothly but only in medium graphics setting.

Lenovo launched the Yoga Tablet 10 with a staggering 9000mAh power battery inside and it is aimed to last 18 hours for reading books or more than 12 hours for playing videos. In fact, the number in video rundown test is nearly 11 hours and 45 minutes which is lower than estimated running time. However, it’s still an epic battery life which makes the model become a redoubtable rival in the tablet market, even compared to the high-class tablet like Apple iPad Air.

The Yoga Tablet 10 16GB is $299 and the 32GB version is $399. The prices are very reasonable in the 10-inch tablets market. Normally, you have to pay at least $400 or more to own the Google Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy Tab or Apple iPad Air. Of course, the high class models offer higher level of performance and screen quality.

The newest price can be found at the top of this page

You might compare the Lenovo Yoga Tablet to other 7 to 9-inch models like the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, Google Nexus or Apple iPad Mini. However, the Lenovo tablet is not as light as the tablets are. In additional, the Google Nexus and the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX offers higher resolution displays and more affordable prices than the Lenovo model.

Dell Venue 7 Tablet Review

Overview of the Dell Venue 7 tablet

The Dell Venue 7 is a competitive Android tablet in term of price and built quality but it is not really a perfect tablet for some reasons. The Venue 7 delivers a pure build of Android and expandable storage with the microSD card flap at a reasonable price $149. However, Dell uses the Atom Z2560 chip for the model which causes short battery life and slow performance.  The processor does not perform well with the Android OS like other ARM based devices.

Detailed Review – Dell Venue 7 tablet

Dell is the producer of various Venue tablet versions. The company has recently launched the Venue 7 model as the smallest and most affordable tablet of the Dell product lines. However, the tablet’s design features are not significantly better than other devices. Its back is made of black plastic and there is a Dell logo in the middle. On the edges, there are silver buttons. The build quality is quite good, but it certainly cannot be comparable to a premium tablet.

Dell decided to use Intel’s Atom Z2560 chip in the new Venue 7 instead of an ARM based one. This is the dual-core named Clover Trail with DDR2 memory which doesn’t performs as well as the new quad-core Bay Trail Atom DDR3 RAM. This decision might help Dell to reduce the cost but it also has negative impacts to the tablet’s performance. The tablet offers smooth experience with basic applications. However, it is not recommended for playing games due to its sluggish responses in multi-tasking.

Similar to other low priced tablets, the 7-inch touch screen of the Dell Venue 7 also has a resolution of 800 x 1280. Dell used IPS technology for the screen so it is able to produce accurate colour at viewing angles around 70 degrees. Of course, the average resolution display has lower level of contrast and brightness compared to the very high resolution display in high-end tablets. The Venue 7 is good for watching videos but not suitable for playing Android games because of the significant frame drops.

The cameras are not competitive advantages of the Dell Venue 7, too.  With the low VGA resolution, the front camera produces unclear videos/images in video chatting. The 3.0 MP rear camera is also not a desired model compared to the 5.0 MP resolution in a typical camera.

Dell has not published the battery information for the Venue 7 tablet, including both capacity and estimated battery life. In fact, if you use the tablet to watch digital videos, the battery can last for about seven hours. This number is smaller than the runtime of tablets which have similar 7-inch display. A more significant downside is from the use of Intel Atom Dual core processor instead of using the ARM-based one. Obviously, the battery life is much shorter than the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch with ten hours runtime or the first generation Apple iPad Mini with more than twelve hour lasting battery.

The Dell Venue 7 tablet is sold at only $150 which is an attractive price tag for many buyers. However, since there are also other big competitors in this price-range, Dell must further improve the specifications for their tablet in order to have a firm position in the market. The most competitive tablet is the ASUS MeMOPad HD 7. The usable budget tablet offers great benefit from using four ARM Cortex-A7 cores. It also has a front 1.2 Megapixel camera and a stunning 5 Megapixel rear-camera. The MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet seems to be better than the Venue 7 tablet in every feature but in term of design, the ASUS version is not as thin as the Dell one. The higher-priced tablets with up to $299 are the Kindle Fire HDX and Google Nexus 7. They both offer great resolution displays, high-speed processors but there is no micro-SD slot to expand the storage.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet Review

The Bottom Line

The ASUS MeMo Pad HD 7 is definitely a good budget Android tablet at the price tag of  only $149. The price is lower than the previous generation Google Nexus 7 but it offers similar experience. This device features a sharp 7- inch HD screen, a long-lasting battery and a desired 5 Megapixel rear-camera. However, there are also some performance issues, especially when you are talking about games and image quality. More high-end tablets which even though offer the same resolution camera, may be the better choices if you want to use camera and play games frequently.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet Review Buy

Detail Review of the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7

ASUS is one of the most famous manufacturers in the tablet market, well-known for its Transformer series and the distinctive Nexus 7 for Google. The ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 is a feature-rich tablet which has outstanding performance at a relatively lower price. Perhaps it is the simple design that makes the low price possible. The front design is nondescript black glass and the back is plastic case. There are five colors options for the back: white, pink, green, blue and gray. All of them are smooth surfaces excluding the matte on the blue model.

As a low-cost tablet, the ASUS design is not as luxurious as expensive tablets but still offers valuable attributes, especially the ultra-weight element. The tablet weighs only 0.66 pound and becomes one of the lightest tablets. However, the device is quite thick with the dimension of 0.44 inch.

The ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet used the 1.2 GHz Media Tek processor with four ARM Cortex-A7 cores rather than only two cores in other low cost tablets. This quad-core should help the model to perform at fast speed like other high-price tablets such as the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD. However, the lower chip type – Cortex A7 makes it run a little slower. Therefore, users can have smooth experience of watching videos or surfing the internet with the tablet but for playing games, it performs fairly sluggish.

One of the most valuable features of the inexpensive ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 model is a brilliant 7-inch HD display. Being an IPS LCD screen, it offers high color accuracy and fantastic viewing angles. The 1280×800 resolution is a standard for many low-price Android tablets but compared to the latest Nexus 7 display which applied the extreme 1920×1200 resolution, the screen quality is remarkable in term of detail and clarity level. The anti-reflective feature of the tablet does not perform as well as other tablets because there is no glossy front panel. Therefore, it is hard to use the tablet outside under sunshine due to high level of reflections and glare.

A front 1.2 Megapixel camera is expected from a budget tablet, but Asus also offers a stunning 5 Megapixel rear-camera in the MeMo Pad HD 7. Of course, there are some drawbacks with the camera. The rear-facing camera has no flash feature so it cannot produce sharp photos like almost tablet cameras under low light condition. If there is sufficient brightness, the color is still not really vivid. You can record videos at a relative high resolution of 1920x1080p and get reasonable result. However, it still struggles to produce detail images or hold focus well when there are fast-moving subjects.

The ASUS MeMo offers typical battery capacity compared to other tablets which have similar size. If you use the tablet to watch digital videos, the battery can last for more than ten hours. Thanks to the Cortex-A7 chip which obviously requires not much power during the process. Of course, the battery life is not as long as the remarkable iPad Mini one with outstanding twelve hours but you just have to pay a half price to own a MeMo Pad HD 7.

The MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet applied the Android OS version 4.2. Meanwhile, the new Nexus 7 which was introduced at the same time offers fantastic features of version 4.3 Android OS including more guest profiles, OS-level Bluetooth support and modular DRM for the 1080p Netflix streaming. Moreover, there are available ASUS software and skins on the Android interface stock. Users now can easily adjust some settings or disrupt installed tools.

As mentioned above, the ASUS offers surprisingly low price of $149 for tablet users with great screen performance and high built quality. The most redoubtable tablet in term of price is the Kindle Fire HD 7 of Amazon. It costs only $180 (discounted price) and occasionally, it is sold at even $159 price tag. In additional, the powerful tablet offers upgraded wireless connection and improved performance. Of course the advantages are inherited from the different Fire OS with Amazon’s services. The next competitive tablet is the new Google Nexus 7 with $299 price tag. Certainly, the device features a lighter design, improved performance, a significant high resolution display and advanced networking.

Apple iPad Mini 3 Review

The Bottom Line

Apple launched iPad Mini 3, but it is nearly identical to the iPad Mini 2, except for addition of TouchID sensor. It seems difficult to recommend the iPad Mini 3 since its performance is just like the previous version but you have to spend $100 more for TouchID sensor and a difference in color. The iPad Air and the iPad Mini 2 are considered smarter choices for consumers.

Pros

  • Extended battery life
  • TouchID Sensor
  • Larger Storage Capacities

Over Base 16GB Version

Cons

  • No significant performance distinction with iPad Mini 2
  • Lower Display Color in the marketplace

Detailed Review for Apple iPad Mini 3

There are various considerable advancement in the iPad Air 2, the iPad Mini 3, however, doesn’t change much compared to its previous generation. The truth is that it does not make much exterior distinction compared with the iPad Mini 2. The only great feature is that the TouchID sensor is incorporated to secure your tablet better by using biometric fingerprint. A good thing in the iPad Mini 3 is that you have an additional color option – the gold color.

With the same physical sizes, the cover/case of the preceding iPad Mini’s can be re-used in the iPad Mini 3.

The excellent A7 dual core CPU, which backs 64-bit computing, is applied in the iPad Mini 3, just like iPad Mini 2. This makes iPad Mini 3 and 2 performances alike. In reality, the existing apps run without serious troubles in iOS. It is a tough question to decide to buy the new iPad Mini due to its drawback. It doesn’t have features such as slow-motion video or continuous shooting mode photography which are built into the new iPad Air 2.

Upgrade of storage space from the base 16GB version makes iPad Mini 3 distinguished from the others. $499 and $599 got you storage of 64GB and 128GB, respectively. The storage is as twice as the preceding year iPad 2 but without increasing the cost of the device. Though this is certainly helpful, it let you down when realizing the base model of 16GB. Another down side is that Apple has no approach to extend this space of microSD flash card. Fortunately, you can use the free space in iCloud service to store the media files that you buy from Apple’s store, saving you from using storage space in your local machine.

There is no difference in the iPad Mini 3’s display panel. In other words, the 7.9-inch panel performs equivalent retina resolution of 2048×1536 in other iPad versions. The point is Apple did not set the high-quality display like it did in the Mini 2. Indeed, the screen color gamut of the new iPad Air 2 and many competitors are significantly better than iPad Mini 3. This is really a matter if you are seriouly working in the graphics or use it with the aim of editing photo and video. For these purposes, the iPad Air and iPad Air 2 would be the better alternatives.

Battery life is a plus for the iPad Mini 3 despite the fact that it stays totally the same as the previous model. The original Air can run on battery for around an hour more than iPad Mini 3 due to the reduced size of iPad Mini 3 compared with iPad Air 2. The similar interior consisting of CPU and battery power of 23.8 hours results in capable of obtaining up to 12.5 hours like iPad Mini 2. This makes it outstanding from other tablet in terms of battery life, even new Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2.

One of the headaches  that Apple faces with iPad Mini 3 is that it becomes the competitor of the iPad Mini 2 due to the similarities of the 2 generations. The iPad Mini 2 seems even more appealing to buyers on account of its lower price.   The Ipad Mini 3 with the price at $399 costs $100 more compared to iPad Mini 2. Coming next is the original iPad Air. The 16GB version has an equal price of $399 and larger a little bit but it brings superior display with a little better performance. Apart from Apple, Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 and Google Nexus 9 tablets have bigger screens but screens and cameras of both work more efficiently.

Detailed Review of Microsoft Surface Pro 3

There are fantastic laptop-tablet hybrid features of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It’s display size is 12 inches, which is as large as the size of a paper. The new version offers not only larger touchscreen but also owns smaller design dimensions compared to the Surface Pro 2. Microsoft changed the thickness from more than 0.5’’ to only 0.36’’ and the weight from 2 lps to about 1.75 lps. The adjustment certainly make it a more portable device even though the display size is increased. Microsoft has adjusted the back keyboard hinge. There is a dual-position stand at the Surface Pro 2.  Meanwhile, the kickstand hing of the Surface Pro 3 has the angle of inclines of up to 150 degree, which is significantly wider than the previous version. Now users can enjoy the strong and flexible stand. In addition to the remarkable adjustments, the Microsoft Surface model also has excellent build quality.

Microsoft has decided to use the 4th generation Intel Core i3 4020Y processor for the inexpensive Surface Pro 3. If the processor is used for a laptop, it certainly will perform slowly. However, the Dual Core processor for the Surface device makes it run faster than other Microsoft tablets that use Atom processor. Actually, this processor performs excellently in terms of software efficiency, media apps or internet search. Noticeable issues may occur if you want to edit videos. The reason might be due to the low 4GB-DDR3 memory which is not enough for running the memory intensive softwares. Certainly, you could upgrade to the Core i5 and i7 versions to have better performance.

Price of the Surface Pro 3 tablet is not expensive because of its storage space is only 64 GB. The space is larger than typical tablets and enough to store most of your essential personal stuffs. However, since this tablet use a full Windows OS, the storage space may not be sufficient to install many software. This is the weakest feature because if you want to download apps or save digital files, it quickly uses up all the available storage. Thanks for the included microSD card slot which help users to add more storage space. However, the microSD is used to save data only. You won’t be able to install software/apps on this additional storage partition. If you want to have larger amount of storage space, the Surface Pro 3 has a high speed USB 3.0 port which helps to quickly transfer your files to an external hard drive.

Focusing on the display quality is one of the Microsoft efforts in producing the Surface Pro 3. They adjusted to the new 12-inch touchscreen with a higher (2160×1440) resolution. The number is absolutely better than the 1920×1080 of the previous generation. However, it is still inferior to 2560×1440 of a standard PC screen. This relatively smaller number of pixels in the horizontal dimension is useful when you use the tablet in the portrait orientation. Even though the display also use Retina technology, which is the same as the Apple iPad Air, but the Surface Pro 3 has a larger screen, meaning lower pixel density (number of pixels per square inch). Users can easily recognize that this Surface Pro version roduces images with higher color quality and larger viewing angles. However, the touch screen is still problematic when you use under bright light due to the low glare quality. When that issue arises, the flexible kickstand can be adjusted to mitigate the problem.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet has a shorter battery life since the hybrid tablet has multiple power hunger components and applications.

It is said that users can freely surf the internet during nine hours with the new tablet.  However, surfing the internet does not consume much power compared to other tasks. If you only watch videos from your local machine, you are only able to use it for seven hours and thirty minutes. This battery life is even shorter if you stream movies from the internet. This is a longer lasting battery life compared with the Surface Pro 2 but still need to be improved for users who need to use it continuously for the whole working day. The battery life is also shorter than most current tablets on the market. However, compared to the ultraportable laptops, the Surface Pro 3 is still a big competitor.

The Surface Pro 3 also comes with a large number of accessories. The first thing is the digital Pen which offers almost the same ease of use as a traditional pen. You can be impressed by applications which run smoothly on the Windows 8 operating system. Conversely, the drawback of this digitizer pen is its relatively lower presure sensitivity than the Wacom based digital pen in the previous generation. Users also be mindful about the pen because it is an isolate component of the tablet. The second accessory is the Type Cover. Since the Surface Pro 3 has a larger size, there is more room to accommodate bigger buttons. Nonetheless, not many users type on the Type Cover since using the touch screen still give generally better experience. A slight improvement of the Type Cover is the attached magnetic bar design which help the keyboard is slightly sloping. Typing is generally more comfortable with an incline cover.

The great 2-in-1 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is a affordable tablet/laptop with only $799 price tag. This price is similar with other high-end tablets on the market, and very competitive to the ultraportable laptops. The Type Cover component is charged separately with an additional $129. It is quite hard to find another tablet on the market that has similar performance, unless you are willing to pay more for a gaming tablet such as the Razer Zone. With the Type Cover included, the Surface Pro 3 is similar to the Dell XPS 12 laptop. The Dell laptop gets positive feedback since users can type using the real physical keyboard. However, the Microsoft tablet is more remarkable because of its portable feature.

Amazon Fire HD 6 Review

The Bottom Line

It is not easy to rate accurately the value of the Amazon Fire HD 6 if you do not have much experience about using a tablet. Beside important features like its storage or battery life, the tablet is highly recommended for its great screen and other qualities at the price of under $100 (the updated lowest price is at the top of this page). In addition, if you want to buy a tablet for your children, kids version which is sold at $149 is a great choice.

Detailed Review of Amazon Fire HD 6

As a well-experienced technology retailer, it’s not hard for Amazon to recognize that customers are more willing to buy tablets at a relatively lower price. This customer behavior was revealed from the sales of their 7-inch tablets and numerous children were enjoying the Amazon devices.

To maximize the benefit from the prospective segment, Amazon introduced the new Fire HD 6 and Fire HD 7-inch  models. The two versions are different only in term of the dimension (size). You will have to spend only $99 to buy the fantastic Fire HD 6 model that is cheaper than all tablets in the market at that time.

The great design at that low price makes the Fire HD 6 even more adorable. Its front design is similar to the Fire HDX 7 but in smaller dimension. However, the back design is very distinctive with a nice plastic back.

There are numerous colour options for the back such as the typical black, citron (yellow), cobalt (dark blue), magenta and white. Compared to the Kindle HDX 7 device, this 0.4 inches device is thicker. However in term of weight, the tablet is kind of lighter tablet with only 0.63 pounds.

The Fire HD 6 and 7 versions are empowered by MediaTek 8315 called “Super-Quad” processors. It is a perfect combination of the dual-core Cortex-A15 CPU and dual-core Cortex A7 CPU. Simply, we know it as a variable processing setup. The two high-performance Cortext-A15 work up to 1.5 Ghz whilst the two energy-efficient Cortex-A7 processors works up to 1.2 Ghz.

It will be unfair to compare the remarkable low-cost tablet with premium devices such as gaming tablet with dedicated graphics. However, the tablet absolutely is a good choice among other models cost from $100 to $150. It offers various essential attributes for reading, playing simple games and streaming media.

As other classic tablet with low price, limited storage is a minus point. The $99 Fire HD 6 just provides 8 GB internal SSD. It means there is only about 4.5 GB available for other extra apps. If you want to own a 16 GB Fire HD 6 model, you need to pay $20 more. Amazon offers the Kids Edition with 8 GB storage only. Obviously, the limited space does not bring to users chances to try many applications and media freely. It is really an considered issue when you are not able to connect to Amazon cloud service.

The Kindle Fire HD 6 doesn’t have a SD card slot to upgrade the limited space, which is similar to other Amazon tablets. About this aspect, the Kindle Fire HD 6 is not comparable to the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 HD – a stylish and portable 7 inch tablet.

In tablets’ production, screen quality requires certain investment because it is the most expensive part. How to allocate budget to produce the low cost tablet with high quality display is not easy, but Amazon did it very well. It is not about the 6-inch 1280 x 800 resolution screen that make you not able to watch 1080p video. It is about brightness and sharpness. You are now able to use it outside without blaze issue. Colour elements are reflected very close to the reality.

One more Amazon’s attempt is that they added both rear and front-facing cameras in the Kindle Fire HD, however,  the resolution is quite low. We could not require much on the front VGA (640 x 480) and the 2 MP rear camera. They are fine for video calls but the color and clarity will not be good. Because of the relatively low resolution, the rear camera could not reproduce color accurately. It is fine for children to take a quick snap but it is not for taking serious photos and then printing out.

The Fire HD 6 battery capacity are not revealed by Amazon but battery life is roughly estimated to be more than eight hours for basic usage. If you use the tablet to watch digital video, the battery can last for about six hours. The number is lower than the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 HD offer.  Besides, the number of the Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display is twelve. Therefore, taking the charger during your long trips is highly recommended.

Last but not least, it is worth to discuss more about the Kids Edition which I mentioned before. The version is not different much from the Fire HD 6. However, its price is $ 149 and it offers interesting features for children such as plastic case to deal with bumps and extreme drops or unlimited access to Amazon FreeTime in one year. Children feel free to enjoy more than 5,000 books, movies, TVs, educational apps and games without any additional payment from parents . The benefits are not all. The most remarkable point is that you do not have to worry if your Kids Edition tablet is broken for two year since you bought it.  Almost parents give thanks to the two year warranty – free replacement is provided, no question will be asked!

As suggested before, the Kindle Fire HD 6 is absolutely an economical tablet at $99 cost. Although this comes with the special advertising included but you could dismiss it by paying extra $20. Undoubtedly, the price is lower than value and benefit that the fantastic tablet offers. There are still features need to improved but obviously you will be happy to experience it as an energetic product in the low price tablet market. You might name the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 HD as a competitive rival because of its better cameras quality and expandable storage capability. With the points, we also need to consider the ASUS bigger size which is not at a cheaper price.

ASUS Transformer Book T100 Review

Introduction to the ASUS Transformer Book T100

It is difficult to categorize the ASUS Transformer Book T100 into a specific group. since the meticulous device is not different from the former ASUS Transformer model. However, consisting of a keyboard part makes the 10-inch Windows tablet be a hybrid laptop which is differentiated with previous versions. The keyboard dock basically offers keyboard, trackpad and a USB 3.0 socket. The characteristics do not integrate more battery but it also helps to save cost and create lighter weight. The tablet is 0.4 inch inches in term of thinness without the keyboard. If you use the dock, the number is 0.6 inches. In term of weight, the device is 1.2 pounds and its weight increase to 2.3 pounds with the keyboard attached.

Detailed Review of the ASUS Transformer Book T100

In general, the ASUS Transformer Book T100 is rated high as its functional design. If we compare it with its earlier products, the model’s design is not an outstanding one. However, we could not ignore the ASUS’s inexpressive material.  A polished plastic in a gray black color is used for the back surface.  You might feel that it is a standard design. Actually, the distinctive point is from the Start button. Normally, the button of almost Windows 8 tablet is on the front except the device. It is next to the volume adjustment button and users need time to be familiar with the new position on the side.

The Intel 1.3GHz quad-core “Bay Trail” Atom processor are applied the first time in the Transformer Book T100, named a quad-core Z3740 processor. Of course, there are lots of functions the processor need to improve to get stable performance like the standard Intel mobile one. Nevertheless, the ARM based device also does great works like the Microsoft Surface 2 processing its Windows 8 RT software. Actually, it the same feature as lots of low priced laptop offer with the Pentium or AMD A4 mobile processors. It like  receive extra benefits than the standard Windows progamme such as surfing the internet, playing videos and  using valuable applications.

The Transformer Book T100 could not earned positive mark about its storage space. Especially the 32GB model even its price is cheap. The Window OS and essential apps require high level of data space. There is no much free space left. Obviously, the 64 GB tablet at $400 rather than $350 is highly recommended. You can upgrade the storage by using the accessible micro SD card. Once the tablet is connected to the keyboard, you can enjoy a very useful USB 3.0 hub.

The Asus Transformer Book T100 display is 10.1 inch. The 1366 x 768-pixel IPS screen offer sharpener images in term of contrast and color attributes. It also brings to users wider viewing angles. All the display features are remarkable at low price tablet. Although the Asus’s resolution display is less than the Microsoft Surface 2 but it is better than the Acer Iconia W3-810 or the Dell Venue Pro 8. There is only one disadvantage of dusky screen. It make user feel uncomfortable in some cases such as experience the tablet under sunshine circumstance. Luckily, the new Atom processor also performs an Intel HD Graphics anemic GMA technology as the previous versions. Certainly, 3D PS games are not available but you will receive significant value from speedy non-3D windows programme.

Keyboard usually is not mentioned in reviewing a tablet. Conversely, the Transformer Book T100 is an interesting hybrid device with a keyboard dock attached. The tablet’s price is included the dock. The separated keyboard component is distinctive and brings to users stimulating experience instead of QWERTY shown on the tablet display. The negative point is about the isolated keyboard size. The keys are designed too closely. It is not suitable for users who have big fingers. The dock quality is good and performs very well handing orders. However, many people turn to typing on the screen because they feel that it is more comfortable and saving their time.

The tablet has 31WHs battery which helps you to use the device in a long period. Unlike the previous Transformer versions, there is no additional battery included in the keyboard dock. If we test the battery by playing videos, it is available for more than 8.5 hours by the impressive Atom Z3740 processor with the full Windows version. This number is lower than ten hours of the Microsoft Surface 2 but in the competitive tablets market applied the full Windows 8 software, its battery life is a significant advantage. You need to note that the device is charged via the micro USB port on the tablet and be patient when you want to acquire full-charged status.

The ASUS Transformer Book T100 is known as a fantastic low cost Windows tablet but also a hybrid laptop at only $350 for the 32 GB model.  Although it’s quad-core Atom Z3740 processor need to improved more to perform as great as similar laptop segment, it still aware of providing essential feature of computing tasks. Undoubtedly, it also competitive Windows based tablet that other competitors need to try hard to compete with its valuable characteristics. The ASUS’s display is larger than the Acer Iconia W3-810. In additional, it has faster processor and lighter weight than the Acer one. Compared with the Dell Venue 8 Pro, the ASUS Transformer Book T100 processes faster in a larger design. Its price is higher but it has sharpened screen because of higher resolution technology and included keyboard. All the advantages make the T100 become incomparable tablet in the market.
